SOMETHING TOLD THE WILD GEESE
Rachel Field
Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, -- "Snow."
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned, -- "Frost."
All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.
Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly, --
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

This is so beautiful and I was out just at dusk and a formation of geese flew over head. How can anyone not be in awe of that....Thank you for posting to Nature Notes Caron...
And the geese took off - I think I saw them flying overhead today, in formation, flying toward the south.
Looks very frosty where you are. We just have cold and brown.
Great shot for the season and I love the poem.
OHHH, I love this poem! So glad you shared it till I would get to see it.
Brrrr, that looks cold! Love the poem, too.
