Nature Notes Thursday

Visit Michelle at the lovely Nature Notes Thursday Meme for beautiful photos of the changing season.

I walk a lot around the neighborhood and rhubarb grows here in Iowa very well. What I am seeing is an explosion of new growth in even the tiniest rhubarb plants on my walking route. I walk on trails and so I see many backyards. For that, I am privy to a lot of rhubarb business.
The reason for this? Having not called my local extension office, I really don't know the answer. But in my mind, I suspect the unseasonably cool weather we've had for several weeks. Maybe the rhubarb thinks it is April or May.
I'll be harvesting and freezing more this weekend. So, anybody driving through Des Moines? Come on over! I'll feed you rhubarb cake and make you take a quart home.

It's been a weird growing season everywhere, I think - but I would not be averse to taking advantage of any overabundance!;-)) Alas, it's been many years since I've been to Des Moines...

Oh! And to answer your comment on my entry, today: Yes, I really did call him a moron to his face, and several other choice things, besides. ;-D

Rhubarb is no longer in season up here in Maine. Which is a shame, as my mother makes a mean strawberry rhubarb pie.

I have to admit that I have never tasted rhubarb pie OR rhubarb cake! Want to send some to Baltimore?

That's a great shot. Sounds like fun walking around and seeing the rhubarb in back yards.

I'll stop by for rhubarb pie and coffee out of one of your many mugs. LOL

RJ Flamingo: tell it like it is! I love that.

BAG: Is it already October in Maine?

RW: pie crust is difficult for me. I would totally mail you fresh rhubarb. Would that mail? I guess it would.

Julie: I'm glad to know that.

Juice: Goodness, yes. I can mail a small cake. :) lemme know!

Carver: gear up. It's a six-mile walk.

Moosh: I will even let you choose the mug you like the best!

It has indeed been a very strange growing season. Nothing seems right this year. I haven't had rhubarb since I was a kid. It does make a nice pie though, no doubt about it.

Rhubarb cake - I've never had it. Does it tastes a bit like zucchini cake?

I've got tons of basil this year. There's only so much pesto one family can eat.

Many people have said this has been a strange year for crops.

No it doesn't taste at all like zucchini. It is very tart and requires a lot of sugar, but not enough to ruin the tartness.
